What Superbowl, Let’s Go Raptors!

Sacramento Kings Toronto Raptors

The Sacramento Kings are in town for an early afternoon game against the Raps. It’s the first and only chance the home town crowd will get to see the consensus rookie of the year candidate Tyreke Evans. Evans is averaging 21pts, 5rbs and 5asts on the season, comfortably ahead of his closest competition Brandon Jennings. Evans is managing to put up impressive numbers despite having to share the ball with his backcourt teammate Kevin Martin. Martin has been inconsistent since his return from a wrist injury and the talk in Sacramento is that the two players are incompatible. Martin is the most likely to be moved but with $36 million and 3 years left on his contract after this year, the Kings may have to lower expectations.

The Kings, like the Nets, are another team that is playing better basketball in recent games. Sure they’ve lost five in a row but they’ve all been against good teams and none of them have been blowouts. The Raptors need to take care of business before heading out to watch the Superbowl.

Raptors face an improving Nets team

New Jersey Nets Toronto Raptors

The New Jersey Nets aren’t the same squad that teams were walking over earlier in the season. The wins are still rare but the Nets are playing better basketball. Over the last three games against Washington, Philadelphia and Detroit, the Nets haven’t lost a game by more than four points. Brook Lopez has been playing at a high level all year putting up David Lee type stats. Devin Harris returned from a four game absence and put up 24pts and 14asts against the Pistons yesterday. The Nets aren’t a team anyone can take lightly anymore without getting burned.

Not including tonight, the Raptors play three games at home over the next fifteen days. That’s alot of downtime between games. The All-Star weekend will give every team a break but February is a light month for the Raptors. With the next few games against teams below the .500 mark, Toronto has a chance to create some separation between them and the other teams fighting to get into the playoffs.

Short-handed Raptors in Indiana tonight

Toronto Raptors Indiana Pacers

The Toronto Raptors are going into tonight’s game against the Pacers without the services of Hedo Turkoglu and DeMar DeRozan. Hedo was knocked out of the game early on Sunday when he took an elbow to the face and suffered a small fracture. DeMar has been out with a sore ankle and probably won’t be back until the game against Sacramento next Sunday. The Raptors have been able to weather these losses mostly due to the amazing play of Chris Bosh and also in part to strong play from guys coming off the bench. Antoine Wright is starting to look like the player Rick Carlisle said would become one of Triano’s favourites. Amir Johnson has tuned his hectic play into focused hustle thanks in part to Jose Calderon’s directing of the offense. Should be a fun game to watch as long as the the Raps don’t start looking past the Pacers to tomorrow’s game against the Nets.

Raptors looking to shut down Granger

Indiana Pacers Toronto Raptors

The Raptors and Pacers meet tonight for the third time this season before wrapping up their season series Tuesday in Indiana. The last time the Raptors played the Pacers, the Raps got out to a big early lead only to cough it up in the second half. That was on a second game of a back to back after a hard-fought game against the Celtics. The Pacers will try to repeat that performance against a well rested Raptors squad.

Chris Bosh is having the best season of his career. He’s improved in every aspect of the game but he’ll be tested tonight when he gets the task to guarding Danny Granger. Granger likes to play on the perimeter and shoot threes. Bosh prefers to stay close to the rim and be in position to help and rebound the ball. If the Pacers keep Bosh on the perimeter it’ll be up to Andrea to control the boards, something he hasn’t learned to do consistently yet. Hopefully he has recovered from his foot problems to help the Raptors send the fans home happy.
