A tale of two teams in 8th place

Toronto Raptors Portland Trailblazers

It’s the final game of the mini four game road trip for the Raptors and it comes on the tail end of a back to back against the Portland Trailblazers. The Blazers are rolling right now having won three straight and are making a push up the Western conference standings. They’re in eighth place but only two games back of fifth place Oklahoma City. Driving the Blazers is Brandon Roy’s resurgence after missing fifteen games with injuries. Roy averaged 34.5ppg in the last couple of games while shooting an incredible 70.25% from the field. This doesn’t bode well for the Raptors whose defense has regressed to their early season form.

A matchup of good offense and bad defense

Toronto Raptors Golden State Warriors

The Raptors play the Golden State Warriors for the first time this season. Golden State has had a rough season with injuries plaguing just about everyone in the lineup. Monta Ellis returned to the lineup Thursday after sitting out six games and was productive in the 28 minutes he played but was held back with foul trouble. The Warriors have no shot at the playoffs and are just playing out the season. The most pressing question for the franchise is about the future of Don Nelson who has yet to divulge his plans.

Toronto on the other hand is in a very close race for the playoffs. The Raptors who were solidly in fifth place heading into the all-star break are now in eighth with the Bulls breathing down their necks. If that’s not enough to put aside individual agendas and instill a sense of urgency into this team, they’ll miss the playoffs and deserve it.

Raptors hope to keep the cow bells silent

Toronto Raptors Sacramento Kings

The Sacramento Kings return home to face the Raptors in the second game of a back to back for both teams. The Kings are actually a decent team at home with a 15-15 record. The Raptors like many of the mediocre teams in the NBA have been struggling on the road and will have to play some inspired basketball to steal a win tonight. Both teams probably won’t have their legs so expect a few clankers to be thrown up. Tyreke Evans is still on pace to be the rookie of the year as well as being the only player other than the Big O, LeBron and Jordan to average 20, 5, 5 in their rookie season. If the Raptor defense plays the same way it did the last time these two teams met, Evans will have to use the next few games to bring up that average.

Lakers could be ripe for the picking

Toronto Raptors LA Lakers

The Raptors are in L.A tonight to take on the Lakers who are returning home after a three game East coast trip where they went 0-3 against Miami, Charlotte and Orlando. Kobe is looking to get his team back on track and back to winning with Dallas and Denver chasing them for the Western conference title. The Raptors have been struggling defensively of late and if that continues tonight, the game could be over early. Chris Bosh looked like he was still feeling the effects of the ankle injury that forced him to sit out six games. If the Raptors are going to have any chance of pulling off an upset tonight, they need Bosh playing like the MVP candidate he was earlier and to lead the team with his energy and intensity. It looks like Hedo will also be back and they’ll need him to be at this best as well.
